Descendance - Aboriginal Performers
Descendance - Aboriginal Performers
Descendance was formed by Sean Choolburra in 1993 born from the mighty Ngaru aboriginal dance company (naroo original spelling).
Sean was born in Townsville in Queensland, and has a background from 3 aboriginal tribes, Girrma from Tully(fathers side) Kalkadoon from Mount Isa (mothers side) and Kukuyalanji from Cook Town (grandfathers side).
Ngaru means "shake a leg" -a dance style prevalent around NorthQueensland.
In 1998 Ngaru came under the guidance of the late, great Imelda Willis who came down from the sleepy seaside mission of Yarrabah in far North Queensland, (where she rests in peace). Iimelda gave the group dances and songs from her 2 tribes (kandju/cape york) and (yidindji/cairns). Descendance was born to her loving memory, breaking all barriers in aboriginal performance today.
