Doudoumba

doudoumba 1

Doudoumba has been performing throughout Australia since 1988 in schools, colleges, at cultural festivals, for corporate functions, in clubs as well as supporting international acts as diverse as “The Bhundu Boys”, “The World Saxophone Quartet”, “Malathini and The Mahotella Queens” and “Lucky Dube”.

In 1994 Doudoumba wrote and recorded the theme music for a 6 part documentary on African Soccer aired on SBS television as part of the lead up to the 1994 Soccer World Cup.  Doudoumba is an exhilarating performance using a wide range of traditional African instruments: the Doudoumba [drums from Senegal], the Don Do [talking drum], the Shekere [large gourd covered in beads], the Abtenben [bamboo flute from Ghana] and the Jembe [cone shaped drum from Guinea].  Rhythmic chanting and animated dance are important elements of Doudoumba and crowd participation is encouraged.

Doudoumba’s performers hail from Guadeloupe [West Indies], Ghana [West Africa] and the United States of America.  With a dedication to traditional West African rhythms, dance and song, Doudoumba is a tribute to the spirit of African music and evidence of its ageless universal appeal.
